The fifth strand: Making the case for global issues education in the TESOL classroom

SUMMARY:

We have entered a phase in history where the future viability of the human race will hinge on our ability to communicate and collaborate at the global level, regardless of regional differences. English occupies a special position as a world language. This presentation will argue that bringing global issues into the TESOL classroom is necessary and offers various benefits. The authenticity, immediacy and relevance of these issues is motivating, and they provide ready-made language content. Grappling with global issues promotes interaction, fosters critical, creative and independent thinking, and helps students develop an international posture (Yashima, 2009).
